The car manufacturer Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is better known (at least) in our country by their English name Bavarian Motor Works or BMW cars. Based in Munich Bavaria they were founded in 1916 just over 100 years ago. They are under their own name are specialising now in primarily worldwide luxury cars. In keeping with their luxury brand name BMW also own the Rolls Royce car company. However, they also own and build the new rebranded Mini Cars.
BMW Cars ECU Remapping and the Environment.
Unlike one of their German car competitors, they have been one of the strongest pushers for environmental standards. Within the United States, they have won the title of the worlds most sustainable automotive company ten times. The award is given by the Dow Jones Sustainable Index. In addition the group are the only car vehicle company qualifying for the standard since it first started in 1999. However its environmental record is even bigger than that.
In 1997 BMW Cars were the first car company to appoint an Environmental Manager. That job was especially designed to examine how BMW as a car manufacturer could improve its carbon footprint. The scope included all its offices, factories and in all its vehicles on the road. It then in 2001 made a commitment to the UN Environmental Program through its Global Compact and Cleaner Production Declaration.
BMW is the top-rated car industry manufacturer in the Carbon Disclosure Project Global 500 ranking. It is also 3rd in the ranking across all industries.
They now offer 49 models with EU5/6 emissions norm and nearly 20 models with a CO2 output less than 140 g/km. This means they are the lowest road tax group. Consequently, could provide the future owner with an eco-bonus offered by some European countries. Quite an achievement for such large engine vehicles.
Most of its work in improving the environment through its vehicles has been by making existing models more efficient and produce less dangerous gases. However, even here it is hampered by having to dumb down some of its high standards to get standards approvals across all European countries. See our articles on EU standards here and our ECU remapping FAQs page for more information.
