Your Driving Licence.
As you probably already know the UK driving licence for both Car and Motorbike has been changed. The paper document that accompanied the plastic licence is no longer legally valid and will not be updated. There is no longer any need to send it back when updating your licence details. Or for the naughty boys and girls among you when you are asked to appear at court for a speeding offence.
You will however still be able to see that part of your driving licence online by going to http://Gov.uk and search for “view driving licence”.
However, it may be that other people may want to see your driving licence history the information that would normally be stored on that green piece of paper. For example, it may be an employer doing a check especially if you are driving one of their brand new company cars or you need to hire one.
You don’t necessarily want to share all the detailed information the driving agency may hold about you with other people. But unless you do share some info you will not be able to hire that car or keep driving that new company car or van. What is the solution?
The first thing you need to do is to visit that section of the gov.uk website and look now at your own licence. Look for errors. There should not be any but the guys and girls entering the information on you are still “part human” (the rest is “civil servant”) so they can make mistakes just like you and I do. (Oops sorry if you are employed as a civil servant I did not mean to lose you as a customer so one really big sorry again). If there is a mistake take all the steps necessary to get in touch with DVLA and get it amended straight away.
Whilst you are on that page make a note of the special code it offers you so you can hand that code to the car hire people or your boss. They will then get a fully up to date situation of your current driving licence and you should be able to go ahead with the hire etc.
When this change was first announced that access code was only valid for three days. That meant you would need to gain access and hand over the code almost immediately not always easy if you away on holiday etc.
Imagine for example you were in the French Alps on a holiday when someone crashes into the rear of your car. You need a car hire to complete the rest of the holiday. If you are in a fairly remote place you may not get a very good signal on your smartphone or not have access to a computer so you are not able to get the code. No code no hire.
By the way, I hope before you go away on that holiday you have booked a vehicle service with us so we can give you some reassurance your car or motorbike will not break down and ruin the holiday. It is cheaper to put things right here in Ellon than to have to find a good mechanic abroad who also speaks your range of languages.
UPDATE: As of today 10th July that access code is now valid for 21 days but can only be used once. So don’t test it before handing it over to your boss or they won’t be able to get access and you will need to get a fresh one.
If you need to help someone use that driving licence access code you can get full information here.
